Martand sun temple is declared as a site of national importance by the archaeological survey of India. History of  Martand Sun Temple

Anantnag is an ancient city that came into existence as a market town around 5000 BCE making it one of the oldest urban human settlements in the world. Before the advent of Muslim rule in 1320 CE, Kashmir was divided into three divisions, viz., Maraz in the south, Yamraj in the centre and Kamraj in the north of the Valley. Old chronicles reveal that the division was the culmination of the rift Marhan and Kaman, the two brothers, over the crown of their father. The part of the valley which lies between Pir Panjal and Srinagar, and called the Anantnag, was given to Marhan and named after him as Maraj. While Srinagar is no longer known as Yamraj, the area to its north and south are still called Kamraz and Maraz respectively. These divisions were later on divided into thirty four sub-divisions which after 1871 were again reduced to five Zilas or districts. According to old map of British India (1836), Anantnag was called Islamabad by some.

Architecture of  Martand Sun Temple

The Ancient  Temple Architecture of Kashmir  undoubtedly  bears Greek  influence. This influence is starkly visible  in  the use of stone Pillars , Columns , Trefoiled  Doorways , Ornamental  fritters  , Geometrical designs especially the rectangle and  Triangles  , Images of Gods  Carved on stones and  Pediments . Kashmiri  Stone Architects made some amendments to suit Intense winters . This influence is clearly visible in Martanda  and  Awantipora  stone Temple Architecture   .The  majestic Sun Temple of Martand perched amidst the jungles in the plateau of Mattan  in Anantnag District of Kashmir is also known as dream of stones. The temple is made of Devri stones carried possibly by elephants  . Elephants were seen in abundance in Kashmir till 11th centaury which fact is substantiated in some cantos of  Kalhana’s Rajatarangini.

This temple is  enclosed in a courtyard  of columns and Arches  forming covered passage all round it. .Like Chandrapida Vajraditya , illustrious king  Lalitaditya was a sun worshipper and   a Follower of Vaishnava cult  devoted to the worship of Keshva Vishnu.. Accordingly Many three faced Vishnu and some Chaturbhuja Vishnu  figures have been prominently carved on the walls of  this  Temple . A central Water Tank with narrow  water channels  are  existing to this day . In the right panel of the eastern wall of the   Ante chamber of this Temple , an   image of Aruna  carved discerningly is still visible . . Aruna , the charioteer of surya is  holding the reins of his seven horses.

The outer dimension of this temple is approximately about 200 feet by 170 feet rising upto a height of 75 feet.The inner Mandapa measures roughly 18 feet by 18 feet . About 84 stone pillars Ten to twelve feet long in single piece have been used in the construction. Some of them are still erect and the remaining are broken and scattered inside the complex.

Kulpakji Jain Temple is located at Village of Kolanupaka in Nalgonda district Andhra Pradesh Telangana.The Jain temple was built about 1300 years ago and built by Bharat Chakravarti.The Jain temple is dedicated to Jain 24 th Tirthkar Lord Mahavir.It presently houses idols of the three Jain Tirthankaras namely of Lord Rishabha, Lord Neminath and Lord Mahavira. The temple is also known as Kulpakji Jain Temple. The idol of Lord Rishabha carved of a green stone has been historically famous as Manikyaswami. This place also served as substitute capital of Kalyani Chalukyas dynasty during 11th century.Kolanupaka Temple is flourished as a Jain centre during the Rashtrakutas period. 

Kolanupaka temple was recently renovated by employing more than 150 artisans from Rajasthan and Gujarat. Lord Rishabha, popularly called Adinath Bhagvan, was the first Tirthankar in the Jain religion. It is believed that the original idol of Lord Adinath, known locally as Manikya Deva, has made Kolanupaka its abode. There are eight idols of the other Tirthankars on both the sides of the main temple. The statue of Lord Mahavira is 130 centimetres tall and is said to be made of a single piece of jade. The idols of Lord Simandar Swami and Mata Padmavati are installed on either side of the main temple of Kolanupaka. Kulpakji is an important pilgrimage centre for Svetambara Jains of South India.  

History of  Kulpakji Jain Temple 

Jainism was prevalent in Andhra Pradesh before the 4th century and from early times Kolanupaka was one of the prominent centres of Jainism. During the Rashtrakuta period Kolanupaka flourished as a Jain centre. During the 11th century Kolanupaka was said to be the 2nd capital town of the Kalyani Chalukyas. A number of Jain antiquities and over 20 Jain inscriptions have been found at Kulpak. The inscriptions suggest that Kulpak was a major centre of Kranur Gana of Mula Sangha which was an ancient Jain monastic order. A Manasthambha(Column of Dignity) with an inscription dating to 1125 AD has been found. A 12th century inscription found in the temple mentions the great Jain monk Meghachandra Siddhantadeva entering Sallekhana(suicide by fasting as per Jain precepts). After 1276 AD the Jain activities declined and was re-established in 1711 AD when a boundary wall was erected and the temple of Manikyaswami was renovated. In the Jain scriptures it is mentioned that the Manikyaswami image was originally worshipped by Mandodari the wife of Ravana and was brought here by the ruler Sankar of Kalyana. Some legends state that the temple was built by Bharat Chakravarti the son of Rishabhdeva and the ruler after whom our country is named.

The first Tirthankara in the Jain religion was Lord Rishabha, who is popularly known as Lord Adinath also. It is believed that original idol of Lord Adinath, locally known as Manikya Deva, made Kolanupaka its abode by itself. A complete new temple was built around the existing towers and the old garbhagraha was preserved.Kulpakji is the major pilgrimage center for the Svetambara Jains of South India.

Sammed Shikharji Temple is located in Giridih district in Jharkhand India and also Known as Parasnath Hill.The temple at Shikharji is a new construction with some parts dating to the eighteenth century. However, the idol itself is very old. Sanskrit inscriptions at the foot of the image date to 1678 AD. According to Jainism, following 20 out of 24 Tirthankaras attained Nirvana here so this place is known as Sammed Śikhar or Sammet Shikhar, the ‘peak of concentration’.The hill is also known as Parasnath Hill, a name derived from Parshvanatha, the 23rd Tirthankara who attained Nirvana here.Parasnath Hills stand as the highest mountain peak (1366 m) in the state of Jharkhand and highest mountain range after the Himalaya Mountains. It is one of the most popular sights of Jharkhand, which include a number of temples. On the mountain top there is the Shikharji Jain Temple, an important Tirtha or Jain pilgrimage site. Parasnath Hill is surrounded by a deep forest called Madhuvan, and it was hundreds of miles from populated areas until a few centuries ago.

 

History of  Sammed Shikharji Temple 

The Jain literature is the text where one could find some references about this hill. In the text they have mentioned the hill as a holy place for meditation. Jnatrdharmakatha says everything about their history. In the 12th century, Parsva had mentioned many things in the book. People renovated the pilgrimage between 1925 and 1933. They also made some small temples there and put the Lord Aadinath, Lord Vasupoojya, Neminath, Mahavir and Chandranan etc. in the temples. The statues of Lords are very old and they are at that place from 1678.

Parasnath is the "Marang Buru "or hill deity of the Santhal of Hazaribagh, Manbhum, Bankura and Santhal Parganas and each year they assemble at the period of the full noon in Baisakh (mid April) from these district and celebrate a religious hunt for three days.
On one hand the Hill is place of worship and adoration on the other hand it is worthseeing place in the sense of tourism. Tourists start to visit from the second fortnight of December to last week of January.

Ravechi Mata(Goddesh) Temple is located at Near Nana Reva Village Rapar Taluka of Kacch Gujarat.The temple was built in 1821 Pandava time by Pandva.The temple is built at the shore of the Rav Village on the Western corner of Indian subcontinent.
