Ajmer is a sacred secular town of Rajasthan. Ajmer located inside Aravali hills was founded by Ajaipal Chauhan in 7th century and became the center of Chauhan Rajputs.The Ajmer Sharif Dargah is considered to be among the holiest Muslim shrines in India and is also a famous landmark in Ajmer. The final resting place for 'Gharib-Nawaz', Moinuddin Chishti is located in Ajmer. People of all religions visit the Dargah of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti. The Khwaja left for heavenly abode in 1256 AD after a six day prayer in seclusion. These six days are celebrated every year as the annual Urs, which is attended by innumerable pilgrims irrespective of their faith. The shrine is considered to be a place of wish fulfillment for those who pray with devout and pure hearts. It is said that Emperor Akbar sought blessings for his son at the Dargah.
The entry to the Dargah is through the Dargah Bazaar that leads to the inner courtyard. The high gateway has beautifully carved silver doors. In the courtyard are kept two huge cauldrons with capacity of 2240 kg and 4480 kg. On special occasions, 'Kheer' cooked in these cauldrons is distributed among the pilgrims. The grave of the Sufi Saint is surrounded by a silver railing and is partially covered with a marble screen. The daughter of Shah Jahan had built a prayer room in the Dargah for the women devotees. The premises of the Dargah also has the tomb of Bhishti, tomb of Saint's daughter-Bibi Hafiz Jama and the tomb of Shah Jahan's daughter Chimni Begum.
History of Hazrat Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti
Born in Chisti region in Afghanistan, Saint Moinuddin Chisti was above the material and worldly things. In his process to teach mankind the high way of living he came to India and settled in Ajmer. There, he attracted large number of followers which even included kings and other people of high rank. In Ajmer he practiced the Sufi Sulh-e-Kulh which focused on Hindu-Muslim unity.
The Dargah has several attractive tombs, buildings, Daalaans and courtyards some of which are wonderful examples of the Mughal architecture and were raised during the Mughal ear. The Dargah of Moinuddin Chisti is placed at the northern plinth of the Taragarh mount. Among the other well-known attractions which grabs the attention of the visitors instantly when they enter the Dargah, are the 2 grand Buland Darwaza that were constructed with the monetary contributions of Sultan Ghyasuddin Khilji of Mandoo who was the emperor of Malwa during the period 1469 -1500 A.D. This Ajmer Sharif also has a Dargah which dwells the crypt of Saint Moinuddin Chisti. The Chief (stately) entrance of the Dargah was constructed by “H.E.H. Nisam Usman Ali Khan” from Hyderabad, India. Also, The Ajmer Sharif boasts a “Naqqar Khana (Drum House)” which has 2 naqqars that were gifted by Mughal emperor Akbar during one of his triumph. Akbar was one of the primary Mughal emperors to visit this place in barefoot to seek blessings for his son when Ajmer came under his control. Moreover, the Dargah has several other tombs and gorgeous edifices which are the great instances of first-rate Mughal structural design.
